Weekend in Numbers

Resident statto @splstats brings us the numbers behind the weekend's matches

20 – Rangers defeated Hibernian 4-0 at Ibrox in the cinch Premiership to ensure that Philippe Clement’s reign as manager got off to a perfect start. Abdallah Sima netted a double to take his tally to five league goals for the season, with Nicolas Raskin and Cyriel Dessers scoring the other goals. Rangers are now unbeaten in their last 20 league matches against Hibs, with their last defeat coming back in February 2018. Since then, they have picked up 15 wins and 5 draws, scoring 45 goals in the process.

5 – Kilmarnock climbed to fifth in the cinch Premiership table thanks to a 3-1 victory over Livingston at the BBSP Stadium, Rugby Park. Two goals from Kyle Vassell and one from Danny Armstrong handed Derek McInnes’ side their first league win since the opening day of the season. Armstrong now has three goals and three assists this season – only Celtic duo Matt O’Riley and Kyogo Furuhashi have contributed to more goals in the cinch Premiership this season. Killie have recorded back-to-back wins over the Lions for the first time since Livingston were promoted back to the top flight in 2018.

5 – Dundee United thumped Partick Thistle 5-0 at the Wyre Stadium at Firhill to maintain their unbeaten start to the cinch Championship season. Kevin Holt netted a hat-trick against his former club, while Craig Sibbald and Scott McMann also found the net as Jim Goodwin’s side moved four points clear at the top of the table. It was the first hat-trick of Holt’s career, (perhaps unsurprisingly for a defender), and he became the first United player to net a treble since Lawrence Shankland did so in a 4-1 victory at the same ground back in January 2020. It was United’s biggest away win since they defeated Brechin City 5-0 in the league back in April 2018.

10 – Falkirk moved two points clear at the top of cinch League 1 thanks to a dramatic 2-1 victory over Stirling Albion at Forthbank. Ross MacIver’s early goal was cancelled out by Aaron Dunsmore, but Brad Spencer netted the winner with just seven minutes remaining to give the Bairns a crucial three points. Falkirk have now won each of their last 10 league matches against the Binos, a run which stretches all the way back to 1997. The Bairns have picked up eight wins and two draws from their opening 10 league fixtures – the last (and only other) time they were unbeaten through their first 10 league matches was back in the 1947/48 campaign.

4 – East Fife defeated Stranraer 4-0 at the MGM Timber Bayview Stadium to move further clear of the foot of cinch League 2. Kieran Millar, Nathan Austin, Connor McManus and Liam Newton all found the net to give Greig McDonald’s side just their second league win of the season. This was just the second time in the last five years that the Fifers have won a league match by a margin of four or more goals – the other also came against Stranraer, when they defeated them 8-0 back in April this year. East Fife have now gone six matches without defeat over 90 minutes, though they did lose on penalties to The New Saints in the SPFL Trust Trophy last weekend following a 2-2 draw.
