Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

4 – St Mirren thumped St Johnstone 4-0 at the SMISA Stadium to move further clear in third place in the cinch Premiership. Keanu Baccus opened the scoring for Saints, before a Mikael Mandron double and a late Greg Kiltie goal ensured a comprehensive victory for Stephen Robinson’s side. It was the Saints’ biggest top-flight victory in Paisley since they defeated Celtic 4-0 in March 2010. Saints have picked up five wins, three draws and just one defeat from their opening nine cinch Premiership matches, which is their best start in the top flight since 1932/33, when they had seven wins and two defeats – their ninth match that season was also a home win over St Johnstone.

2 – Dundee climbed to fifth in the cinch Premiership table thanks to a 2-0 victory over Livingston at the Tony Macaroni Arena. A late Joe Shaughnessy double, the first of his career, handed Tony Docherty’s side their first away league win of the season. The Dee have now kept clean sheets in their last three league matches – the last time they had three consecutive shut-outs in the top flight was back in January-February 1990. Including last season, Dundee have suffered just two defeats in their last 19 league matches.

6 – Dundee United continued their unbeaten start to the cinch Championship season by thumping Arbroath 6-0 at Tannadice. Two goals from Louis Moult and one each from Ross Docherty, Kai Fotheringham, Tony Watt and Mathew Cudjoe ensured that Jim Goodwin’s side remain four points clear of Raith Rovers at the top of the table. United also defeated Partick Thistle 5-0 last week – this is the first time they have scored recorded back-to-back league wins by a five or more goal margin since March 1939, when they beat Forfar Athletic 6-0 and Leith Athletic 6-1 at Tannadice. United have seven wins and three draws from their opening 10 league matches – this is just the third time in their history they’ve gone 10 matches unbeaten at the start of a campaign, the others being 1924/25 (10 matches) and 1986/87 (11 matches).

1 – Edinburgh City defeated Annan Athletic 3-2 at Meadowbank Stadium to ensure their first win of the cinch League 1 season. Goals from Robbie Mahon, Robbie Leitch and Danny Handling made it four points from two matches since Michael McIndoe took over at the Citizens – prior to this they had 12 defeats and two draws in 14 matches in all competitions this season. City’s only other victory at Meadowbank in 2023 came way back in February, when they defeated Clyde 3-0.

3 – Dumbarton moved into Round 3 of the Scottish Cup thanks to a thrilling 3-2 victory over Highland League side Banks O’Dee at the Rock. The Sons trailed 2-0 with 20 minutes remaining but Tony Wallace pulled one back in the 71st minute, before Michael Ruth netted twice in stoppage time to secure a victory. This is the first time the Sons have come from two goals behind to win a game since they defeated Peterhead 3-2 at Balmoor in August 2019.
