Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

4 – Dundee thumped St Mirren 4-0 at the Scot Foam Stadium at Dens Park to move up to fifth in the cinch Premiership table. A double from Amadou Bakayoko plus goals from Zak Rudden and Zach Robinson handed Tony Docherty’s side their third win in the last four matches. The Dee have now kept five clean sheets in their last six matches, with Rangers being the only side to score against them in that period. Saturday’s success was Dundee’s biggest top-flight victory since they defeated Hamilton Academical by the same scoreline in December 2018.

6 – Celtic retained their eight-point lead at the top of the cinch Premiership thanks to a comprehensive 6-0 victory over Aberdeen at Celtic Park. Two goals from Hyeongyu Oh and one apiece from Hyunjun Yang, Kyogo Furuhashi, Luis Palma and David Turnbull helped Brendan Rodgers’ side bounce back from their midweek loss to Atletico Madrid. The Hoops became the first Scottish League side to lose then win by a six-goal margin in consecutive matches since September 2006, when Gretna lost 6-0 to Hibernian in the League Cup then beat Partick Thistle 6-0 in the 1st Division. Celtic are now unbeaten in their last 23 matches against Aberdeen in all competitions – they have picked up 20 wins and three draws since their last defeat back in May 2018.

5 – Inverness Caledonian Thistle defeated Ayr United 3-1 at the Caledonian Stadium to climb out of the bottom two of the cinch Championship. Goals from David Wotherspoon, Billy Mckay and a Nick McAllister OG secured a third league win of the season for the Caley Jags. Inverness are unbeaten in five matches since Duncan Ferguson took over, winning three and drawing two – this is the best start of any manager in the history of the club. Inverness had lost nine of their 11 matches in all competitions this season before the arrival of Ferguson.

5 – Hamilton Academical kept up the pressure at the top of cinch League 1 with a 5-0 victory over Stirling Albion at New Douglas Park. Kevin O’Hara scored a hat-trick, while Euan Henderson scored a double (and missed a late penalty for a treble of his own) as John Rankin’s side kept themselves three points behind Falkirk at the top of the table. It was the second hat-trick of O’Hara’s career, the other came in Dunfermline Athletic’s 4-1 win away to Alloa Athletic in October 2020. O’Hara is the first Accies player to score a league hat-trick since Mikael Antoine-Curier (4) and Tony Andreu (3) both did so in a 10-2 victory over Greenock Morton in May 2014.

6 – Peterhead defeated Stranraer 3-2 at Balmoor to hold on to top spot in cinch League 2. First-half goals from Rory McAllister and Scott Ross were cancelled out by two Stranraer equalisers, but Joe McKee secured the three points with a last-minute winner. Co-managers Ryan Strachan and Jordon Brown have led the Blue Toon to six consecutive league wins – this is twice as many league games as Peterhead won in the entirety of last season. The last time Peterhead won six in a row in the league was in February-March 2019, on their way to winning the League 2 title.
