Premier Sports Cup

Weekend in Numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the Premier Sports Cup...

6 - Aberdeen thumped Dumbarton 6-0 at Pittodrie to cruise into the next round of the Premier Sports Cup. Two goals from Ester Sokler and one apiece from Jack MacKenzie, Peter Ambrose, James McGarry and Slobodan Rubezic saw the Dons seal top spot in Group A with four wins out of four. It was the Dons' biggest win since they beat Faroese side NSI Runavik by the same scoreline in August 2020, and their biggest in a domestic fixture since a 7-0 win over Dundee at Dens Park in March 2017. Aberdeen are now unbeaten in 29 matches against Dumbarton in all competitions - their last defeat was over a century ago, back in April 1920.

5 - Dundee completed a perfect Premier Sports group stage campaign with a 6-0 win over Inverness Caledonian Thistle at Glebe Park. A Simon Murray treble, a double from Sebastian Palmer-Houlden and an Antonio Portales goal made it four wins out of four for Tony Docherty's side, who finished as the top scorers in the group stage with 18 goals. Murray has now scored five hat-tricks for five different clubs in the Premier Sports Cup group stage - he did so for Dundee United in 2016, Hibernian in 2017, Queen's Park in 2022 and Ross County in 2023. He is the top scorer in the group stages since they were reintroduced in 2016 - he has netted an incredible 26 goals in 23 appearances.

6 - Queen's Park progressed from the group stages of the Premier Sports Cup for the first time thanks to a 6-0 victory over Kelty Hearts at The City Stadium. Doubles from Roddy MacGregor and Jack Turner plus goals from Dom Thomas and Sean Welsh secured one of the three best runners-up spots and a place in the last 16 for the first time since 2012/13. Callum Davidson's side also beat Elgin City 4-0 in midweek - it's the first time they have scored four or more goals in consecutive games since March 2014, when they beat Albion Rovers 4-0 and East Stirlingshire 4-1 in League 2.

4 - Falkirk defeated Stenhousemuir 4-0 at the Falkirk Stadium to seal top spot in Premier Sports Cup Group B. A double from Ross MacIver and others from Callumn Morrison and Liam Henderson saw John McGlynn's side sail into the last 16. The win was a continuation of Falkirk's free-scoring form - it was the eighth time this year that they have scored four or more goals in a game. This was only the second time these local rivals had faced each other at the Falkirk Stadium - the Bairns also won the other, back in August 2011.

1 - Spartans secured top spot in Premier Sports Cup Group E with a 1-0 victory over Livingston at Home of the Set Fare Arena. Cammy Russell's dramatic late winner was enough to take Dougie Samuel's side into Round 2 of the competition for the first time. It was Spartans' first ever win over Livi - their only previous meeting was a 4-0 Livi win at City Park in the Scottish Cup in 2004. With both Hearts and Hibs also in the last 16, it is the first time Edinburgh have had three clubs at this stage of the competition since 1988/89, when Meadowbank Thistle joined Hearts and Hibs.
