Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

3 – Celtic defeated Rangers 3-0 at Celtic Park to maintain their flawless start to the William Hill Premiership season. Goals from Daizen Maeda, Kyogo Furuhashi and Callum McGregor helped Brendan Rodgers’ side make it four wins from four in the league. The Hoops have still not conceded a goal in the league – this is just the fourth time in their history they have kept clean sheets in their opening four league matches, having also done so in 1906/07, 2001/02 and 2010/11. McGregor’s goal was his third of the season – he has already surpassed his tally of two for the whole of last season. Celtic have now lost just one of their last 13 matches against Rangers in all competitions – they have nine wins, three draws, and just a single defeat, which came in May 2023.

1 – Dundee United continued their strong start to the William Hill Premiership season with a 1-0 victory over Heart of Midlothian at Tynecastle. Ross Graham’s goal was enough to seal all three points for Jim Goodwin’s side, as they moved into third place with eight points from four matches. The Terrors are unbeaten in their opening four matches of a top-flight campaign for the first time since 2009/10, when Craig Levein’s side would go on to finish in third place. The victory ended a run of eight matches without victory over Hearts – United had lost five and drawn three since their last win in this fixture in February 2016, when Guy Demel and Paul Paton scored in a 2-1 victory at Tannadice.

4 – Falkirk continued their perfect start to the William Hill Championship season by coming from behind to defeat Greenock Morton 3-2 at Cappielow. John McGlynn’s side trailed 2-0 inside half an hour, but goals from Brad Spencer, Dylan Tait and Alfredo Agyeman secured the victory and extended their unbeaten league run to 42 matches. This is just the fifth time in the Bairns’ history they have won their opening four league games of the season, and they went on to win the league in each of the previous four (1935/36, 1974/75, 1979/80 and 2002/03). Saturday’s win was the first time Falkirk have come from two goals behind to win a game since they defeated Rangers 3-2 in the Championship in March 2016, with Blair Alston, Myles Hippolyte and Bob McHugh all scoring inside the final 20 minutes.

5 – Stenhousemuir thumped Annan Athletic 5-1 at Ochilview to move level on points at the top of William Hill League 1. Kinlay Bilham and Mikey Anderson opened the scoring before a second-half hat-trick from Blair Alston secured an emphatic victory for Gary Naysmith’s side. It is the first hat-trick of Alston’s long career in Scottish football - indeed he had never previously scored more than once in a league game, although he did do so in cup competitions and last season’s play-offs. This is the first time in over 30 years that the Warriors have scored five or more goals in a third tier match at Ochilview – the last time was a 5-0 victory over Albion Rovers in February 1994.

5 – East Fife continued their strong start to the William Hill League 2 season by thrashing Clyde 5-1 at MGM Timber Bayview Stadium. Doubles from Nathan Austin and Alan Trouten plus Adam Laaref’s first goal for the club ensured that Dick Campbell’s side moved to 12 points from their opening five matches. Austin has six league goals already this season, making him the top scorer in any division of the SPFL, while Trouten moved on to four, which places him joint second with Ayr United’s Anton Dowds. The Fifers have won five consecutive matches in all competitions for the first time since 2018.
