Weekend in Numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend...

2 – St Mirren defeated Rangers 2-0 at Ibrox to remain in sixth place in the William Hill Premiership. Mikael Mandron and Toyosi Olusanya scored the goals as Stephen Robinson’s side made it five wins from their last seven away matches. This was St Mirren’s first win at Ibrox since November 1991, when Kevin McGowne scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory - in 25 visits since then, Saints had lost 23 and drawn two. They also beat Rangers in Paisley on Boxing Day – this is the first time they’ve recorded back-to-back wins over Rangers since 1980, when Jim Clunie’s side finished in third place, two positions ahead of the Light Blues.

13 – Hibernian boosted their chances of a third-place finish in the William Hill Premiership thanks to a 2-1 win over Celtic at Easter Road. A Josh Campbell double was enough to give David Gray’s side all three points, keeping them in fifth place and just four points behind Aberdeen in third. The Hibees are unbeaten in 13 matches in all competitions, winning nine and drawing four – this is their best run since being promoted back to the top flight in 2017. This is just a second win for Hibs in their last 25 meetings with Celtic in all competitions – the other was a 4-2 success in May 2023.

7 – This was the first time in seven years that both Celtic and Rangers lost a domestic match on the same day – the last time was on 3rd February 2018, when Celtic lost 1-0 to Kilmarnock at Rugby Park and Rangers were beaten 2-1 by Hibernian at Ibrox.

8 – Livingston climbed to second in the William Hill Championship thanks to a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ayr United at Somerset Park. Danny Wilson’s first half goal was cancelled out with 15 minutes to go, but Robbie Muirhead scored a sensational winner deep into stoppage time to help Livi leapfrog their opponents in the table and remain four points behind Falkirk. Muirhead has scored five goals in his last seven appearances, and has hit double figures for the third consecutive season – prior to 2022/23 he had never reached that tally. David Martindale’s side are now unbeaten in eight matches in all competitions – they have seven wins and a draw since losing away to Queen’s Park at the start of January.

1 – Cove Rangers moved to the top of William Hill League 1 with a 2-1 victory over Dumbarton at Balmoral Stadium to. Cove conceded early, but Mitch Megginson levelled things up on the stroke of half-time and Fraser Fyvie scored a crucial late winner. Cove are ahead of Stenhousemuir on goal difference and one point ahead of Arbroath, though the Red Lichties do have a game in hand. Megginson moved on to 11 league goals for the season, making him joint top goalscorer in the division alongside Ross Cunningham of Kelty Hearts. Paul Hartley’s side have lost just one of their last 10 league matches – they have six wins and three draws in that period. Cove are unbeaten in their last eight meetings with Dumbarton – their only defeat to the Sons came the first time the clubs met back in December 2020.

3 – Forfar Athletic defeated Bonnyrigg Rose 2-0 at New Dundas Park to give themselves a lifeline in the William Hill League 2 relegation battle. Reuben McAllister opened the scoring and a Kieran Somerville own goal ensured that Jim Weir’s side would move to within seven points of Rose at the bottom of the table, with two games in hand. It was Forfar’s first league win in 10 matches – their last win also came against Bonnyrigg back in December last year. In fact, each of the Loons’ last three league wins have all been against Bonnyrigg, the other coming in September. Nine of their 19 league points have come against Rose – their only other league win came against Stranraer in September.
