Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the weekend

8 – Hibernian took a massive step towards securing third place in the William Hill Premiership thanks to a 3-1 win over Dundee United at Easter Road. Goals from Martin Boyle, Mykola Kukharevych and Dwight Gayle moved David Gray’s side three points clear of Aberdeen with three games to play, and with the benefit of a vastly superior goal difference. Saturday’s win was Hibs’ eighth consecutive home win in all competitions – this is their best run since 1998/99, when Alex McLeish’s side won nine in a row during their Division 1 title-winning campaign. The last time they did so as a top-flight club was 50 years ago, when they won 10 on the spin from April-September 1975.

12 – Kilmarnock defeated St Johnstone 2-0 at McDiarmid Park to climb further away from the relegation zone in the William Hill Premiership. David Watson and Danny Armstrong found the net as Derek McInnes’ 9th-placed side moved six points clear of Ross County in 11th with just three matches remaining. Armstrong’s goal was his 25th for the club in 154 appearances – he is the first player to reach a quarter-century of goals for Killie since Rory McKenzie in a 3-1 win over Ayr United in March 2022. The Ayrshire side ended a run of 12 away matches without a win in all competitions – they had drawn two and lost 10 since beating Heart of Midlothian at Tynecastle in October.

15 – Falkirk sealed the William Hill Championship title thanks to a 3-1 victory over Hamilton Academical at the Falkirk Stadium on Friday night. The Bairns went behind early on but a double from Ethan Ross and a goal from Calvin Miller ended a 15-year wait for a return to the top flight. John McGlynn has led Falkirk to back-to-back titles – they are the first team since Gretna in 2005/06 and 2006/07 to win the third and second tier in consecutive years. The Bairns have won 27 of their 36 home league games over these two seasons, losing just twice. This was Falkirk’s eighth second-tier title – they have now won this division more than any other club, having previously been tied with St Johnstone on seven apiece.

4 – Stenhousemuir beat Dumbarton 2-1 at Ochilview to secure a top-four finish in William Hill League 1. Matty Aitken’s early goal was cancelled out but Blair Alston’s winner ensured that Gary Naysmith’s side leapfrogged Alloa Athletic to take the final spot in the William Hill Championship play-offs. Stenny won all four matches against Dumbarton this season – it’s the first time they have ever done so against the Sons. This is the Warriors’ highest finish in the third tier since 1995/96, and they remain in with a chance of reaching the second tier for the first time since the reconstruction to smaller leagues in 1975. The Warriors will face Airdrieonians in the play-off semi-final, with the first leg on Tuesday and the second on Saturday.

9 – Forfar Athletic sealed their survival in William Hill League 2 for another season thanks to a nervy 0-0 draw with Stirling Albion at the Alpha Projects Stadium at Station Park. A point was enough for Jim Weir’s side to finish in 9th place, ahead of Bonnyrigg Rose on goal difference. The Loons lost just one of their last seven matches, and kept five clean sheets in those games as they did enough to extend their 103-year stay in the Scottish League. Bonnyrigg will now face East Kilbride over the next two weekends for the final spot in next season’s SPFL.
