Premier Sports Cup

Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from matchday five of the Premier Sports Cup...

6 – Livingston ensured progression to round 2 of the Premier Sports Cup with a 6-0 victory over Kelty Hearts at the Home of the Set Fare Arena. Robbie Muirhead netted a double, with Andy Winter, Adam Montgomery, Shane Blaney and Stevie May also on the scoresheet for David Martindale’s side. This is Livi’s biggest win in over a decade, since they beat Stranraer 8-0 at Stair Park in the same competition in August 2012. You have to go even further back for the last time the Lions scored six goals at home – that was in July 2011, again in the League Cup, when they defeated Arbroath 6-0.

0 – Kilmarnock overcame East Fife 4-0 at the BBSP Stadium, Rugby Park to move into round 2 of the Premier Sports Cup. Two goals from Ben Brannan and one apiece from Marcus Dackers and Djenairo Daniels ensured that Stuart Kettlewell’s side topped their group. This was Killie’s first meeting with East Fife since October 2011, when they beat the Fifers 2-0 in the League Cup on the way to winning the competition. The Ayrshire side did not concede a single goal in the group stage – this is the first time they have kept four consecutive clean sheets since August-September 2019.

8 – St Johnstone thumped Elgin City 8-0 at McDiarmid Park to seal their place in round 2 of the Premier Sports Cup. Doubles from Makenzie Kirk and Jamie Gullan plus goals from Reghan Tumilty, Sam Stanton, Uche Ikpeazu and Sven Sprangler made it four wins out of four for Simo Valakari’s side. This is Saints’ biggest ever win in national competition – the last time they won a game by eight or more goals was a 9-0 victory over Albion Rovers in 1946, but that came in the wartime Southern League Cup. The last time Saints scored eight times in a match was an 8-1 victory over Partick Thistle at Firhill in August 1969.

3 – Partick Thistle defeated Ross County 3-1 at the Global Energy Stadium to make it through to the last 16 of the Premier Sports Cup. Robbie Crawford, Logan Chalmers and Ben Stanway scored the goals for Mark Wilson’s side, who topped the group with a maximum 12 points. Thistle have a good record in the group stages – this is the seventh time in 10 seasons that they have made it through to round 2. The Jags have now won four of their last five matches against the Staggies in all competitions, with the exception being their Premiership play-off final defeat in June 2023.

3 – Alloa Athletic sealed their spot in round 2 of the Premier Sports Cup with a 3-2 victory over Airdrieonians at the Albert Bartlett Stadium. Owen Foster, Scott Taggart and Steven Buchanan were on the scoresheet for Andy Graham’s side as they secured a fourth consecutive victory in the group stage. This is just the third time the Wasps have made it through to the last 16 since the group stage was introduced in 2016 – on both previous occasions (2016/17 and 2020/21) they went on to reach the quarter-finals. That 2020/21 group stage was also the last time they won away to Airdrie – they had suffered defeat on each of their four visits since then.
