Weekend in Numbers

Resident statto @splstats brings us the tales from the William Hill SPFL

21 – Celtic defeated Livingston 3-0 at Celtic Park to make it three wins out of three in the William Hill Premiership. A double from Benjamin Nygren and a goal from Johnny Kenny ensured that Brendan Rodgers’ side moved two points clear at the top of the table. Nygren now has three goals in his first three league matches for the club. The Hoops have still never lost a home match against the Lions – in 21 meetings at Celtic Park in all competitions, Celtic have 18 wins and three draws.

3 – Heart of Midlothian pulled off an incredible comeback to draw 3-3 with Motherwell at Tynecastle in the William Hill Premiership. Derek McInnes’ side trailed 3-0 with just over 25 minutes remaining, but a goal from Harry Milne and two from Claudio Braga salvaged a point. This was the first time in almost 56 years that Hearts have come back from three goals behind to secure a point – that was a 3-3 draw with St Johnstone at Muirton Park in September 1969. Incidentally, the last time Hearts and Motherwell drew 3-3 was back in 2011 at Tynecastle, and on that occasion Motherwell came from 3-0 down.

12 – Raith Rovers defeated Dunfermline Athletic 2-0 at Stark’s Park to continue their strong start to the William Hill Championship season. Lewis Stevenson and Lewis Vaughan scored the goals to make it seven points from nine for Barry Robson’s side to kick off the season. Vaughan is the record goalscorer in this fixture - he has now scored eight times for Rovers against their Fife rivals. Rovers are now unbeaten in their last 12 meetings with the Pars in Kirkcaldy – they have picked up eight wins and four draws since their last defeat back in January 2017.

3 – Alloa Athletic soared to the top of the William Hill League 1 table with a 1-0 victory over Hamilton Academical at the Indodrill Stadium. David Devine scored the only goal of the game to make it three wins out of three in the league for Andy Graham’s side. This is just the second time this century that the Wasps have won their opening three matches of a league campaign – the other was under Jack Ross in 2016/17. Including the end of last season, Alloa have now won five consecutive home matches in all competitions – the last time they achieved this was also at the start of that 2016/17 campaign.

20 – Edinburgh City defeated Elgin City 4-2 at Borough Briggs to continue to claw back their deficit at the foot of William Hill League 2. A Robbie Mahon hat-trick and a goal from Malik Zaid made it seven points from three matches for Michael McIndoe’s side. The Citizens have overhauled almost half of their 15-point deduction and are now just nine points behind Elgin and Stranraer. Mahon is just the second player to score an away league hat-trick for City since their promotion to the SPFL in 2016 – the other was Connor Young against Peterhead last season. Edinburgh continued their incredible record against Elgin – in the last 20 meetings of the clubs they have won 11, drawn eight and lost just once.
