Weekend in Numbers

Resident statto @splstats brings us the tales from the SPFL

10 – Arbroath defeated Ross County 2-1 at the Global Energy Stadium to continue their impressive start in the William Hill Championship. Aaron Muirhead’s late penalty secured the win after Nikolay Todorov’s opener had been cancelled out, leaving the Red Lichties with 10 points from their opening five fixtures. Arbroath are one of three teams level on 10 points at the top of the table, although St Johnstone have a game in hand. This was the first league meeting of these sides in 22 years - they last met in April 2003, a week before “Seven Nation Army” entered the top 10 of the UK charts. Arbroath’s last win in Dingwall in any competition was a 1-0 success in December 2001, when Stevie Mallan (senior) scored the only goal of the game.

6 – Raith Rovers climbed to second in the William Hill Championship thanks to a 1-0 victory over Greenock Morton at Cappielow. Dylan Easton scored the only goal as Barry Robson’s side made it three wins in their last four matches. Easton is the joint top goalscorer in the division with four goals in five league matches. Including last season, Raith have lost just one of their last 15 league matches – that was a 3-2 loss to Partick Thistle last wekeend. Rovers ended a run of six matches without a win against Morton – they had drawn four and lost two since their last victory back in October 2023.

5 – Alloa Athletic picked up a thrilling 5-4 victory over Celtic B at the Indodrill Stadium to record their first win in the KDM Evolution Trophy League Phase. Despite goals from Owen Foster and Kalvin Orsi, the Wasps trailed 4-2 at the hour mark, but Steven Buchanan, Conor Sammon and Kurtis Roberts all found the net to seal a dramatic victory. Alloa have four wins out of five at home this season – their only loss came against St Mirren B in this competition last month. With nine goals scored in total, this was Alloa’s highest-scoring match in over 13 years, since they beat Elgin City 8-1 in the league back in April 2012.

12 – Inverness Caledonian Thistle made it three wins out of three in the KDM Evolution Trophy League Phase courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Stirling Albion at the Sarens PSG Stadium. The Binos scored first through Ross Cunningham, but Chanka Zimba quickly equalised, and Liam Sole’s stoppage-time winner sealed victory for the Caley Jags. Scott Kellacher’s side have won seven of their last eight matches in all competitions – the exception was a home defeat to Stenhousemuir last month. Inverness are now unbeaten in their last 12 meetings with Stirling, with the Binos’ only win coming in the first-ever meeting back in August 1996.

5 – The Spartans thumped Hibernian B 5-1 at the Vanloq Community Stadium to secure their first win in the KDM Evolution Trophy League Phase. A Cammy Russell double and goals from Sean Welsh, Mark Stowe and Bradley Whyte handed Dougie Samuel’s side a comfortable victory to move on to five points from three matches. This is the first time Spartans have scored five times in a home match since they gained promotion to the SPFL – the last time they did so was in a 9-0 win over Stoneyburn Juniors in the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup in March 2023. Spartans are now unbeaten in six matches in all competitions, winning four and drawing two since losing to Dumbarton in early August.
