Weekend in numbers

Resident statto @splstats looks at some of the numbers from the Premier Sports Cup quarter-finals and SPFL fixture card...

13 – Motherwell beat Aberdeen 1-0 at Pittodrie to seal their place in the Premier Sports Cup semi-finals. Regan Charles-Cook scored the only goal to send the Steelmen into the last four for the second consecutive season. The last time they reached the semi-finals in back-to-back seasons was 20 years ago under Terry Butcher. This was Motherwell’s first win at Pittodrie since August 2022 – they had drawn one and lost four in five visits since then. Jens Berthel Askou remains unbeaten in 11 matches in charge of the Steelmen since taking over in the summer, winning five and drawing six. Including the final two matches of last season, Motherwell have gone 13 games without defeat – this is their best run since Tommy McLean led them to 14 without defeat in 1984/85. The Steelmen will play St Mirren in the semi-final after the Paisley side overcame Kilmarnock on penalties on Friday. The other semi-final sees Celtic face Rangers after they defeated Partick Thistle and Hibernian respectively.

6 – Dundee defeated Livingston 3-2 at Dens Park to secure their first William Hill -Premiership victory of the season. Callum Jones scored a 97th-minute winner for Steven Pressley’s side after Simon Murray and Joe Westley’s earlier goals had been cancelled out by Livi. The victory was enough to propel the Dee up six places in the Premiership table, moving them from 11th to 5th, with six points from six matches. This was Dundee’s fourth consecutive victory over Livi – they also won all three league meetings during the 2023/24 campaign.

16 – Queen’s Park picked up their first win in 16 league matches by beating Ross County 2-1 at the Global Energy Stadium in the William Hill Championship. Two goals from Josh Fowler helped the Spiders secure three points for the first time since they beat Raith Rovers 4-0 back in March. Fowler has nine goals in his first 10 appearances for Sean Crighton’s side in his debut SPFL season – the 23-year-old left Beith Juniors for a stint in the UAE two years ago before returning to Scotland in the summer. This was Queen’s Park’s first win in Dingwall since April 1999, although they had only visited three times since.

6 – Inverness Caledonian Thistle defeated Queen of the South 2-0 at Palmerston to remain a point off the top of William Hill League 1. Goals from Chanka Zimba and Luis Longstaff handed Scott Kellacher’s side a sixth win in seven league matches this season, with their only defeat being a 2-1 loss to leaders Stenhousemuir last month. The Caley Jags have now recorded six wins a row in all competitions – the last time they did so was back in April 2023. Caley Thistle’s sixth clean sheet in seven league matches – those two Stenhousemuir goals are the only ones they have conceded in the league all season.

3 – Stirling Albion climbed to third in the William Hill League 2 table thanks to a 3-1 win over Spartans at the Vanloq Community Stadium. Ryan Shanley, Ross Cunningham and Christopher Eadie all found the net for Alan Maybury’s side as they recorded their first away win since the opening day. Stirling’s only previous away win over Spartans was a 3-1 success in the Scottish Cup back in January 2001 at Spartans’ previous home, City Park. This was just the third time the sides had met at Ainslie Park, and it was the Binos’ first win over Spartans there, though they did record five wins over Edinburgh City during their groundsharing spell.
