Classic Match! Partick Thistle 3-0 Motherwell (26/04/2003)

Partick Thistle took a huge step towards SPL safety as they thrashed relegation rivals Motherwell 3-0 at Firhill in a Scottish Premier League classic. Neither side had won a league match for more than two months, leaving both sides in serious trouble at the foot of the table. Terry Butcher's Steelmen were bottom of the league but the Jags sat just five points ahead of them in 10th place having played one game more than their Lanarkshire rivals. With identical goal-differences, the clash at Firhill on April 26 2003 was absolutely crucial. Thistle dominated the game from the outset and took the lead through Alex Burns after 29 minutes. Gerry Britton doubled their advantage on the hour mark and he put the game beyond doubt with the killer third goal in injury time. Motherwell went on to finish bottom of the table, but were spared relegation due to First Division champions Falkirk's failure to meet SPL stadium requirements.
