Classic Match! Motherwell 5-6 Aberdeen (20/10/1999)

Aberdeen won in the SPL for the first time all season as they beat Motherwell 6-5 in a SPL classic at Fir Park. Ebbe Skovdahl's side had made their worst ever start to a league campaign having gone nine games without a win, failing to score a single goal in their first six games and collecting just one point, but they found themselves 2-0 up inside eight minutes at Fir Park thanks to goals from Andy Dow and Robbie Winters. John Spencer pulled a goal back for Motherwell but Winters got his second before Eoin Jess made it 4-1. Don Goodman made it 4-2 at half time but Winters completed his hat-trick in 59 minutes and Paul Bernard scored nine minutes later to make it 6-3 after John Spencer had pulled one back in between. Aberdeen's nerves started to show as John Spencer scored again to complete his own hat-trick before Shaun Teale converted from the penalty spot to make it 6-5, but the Dons held on to secure a famous victory. John Spencer remains the only player in SPL history to score a hat-trick but still end up on the losing side.
