Dundee cinch Championship

Dundee promoted

Dark Blues take cinch Championship title with a 5-3 win over Queen's Park in an incredible game at Ochilview...

Gary Bowyer's side went into the match needing a draw to get over the line but they secured a memorable win thanks to second-half goals from Lyall Cameron and Luke McCowan after an amazing first half ended 3-3.

Ayr United finished second and go into the play-off semi-finals thanks to a late goal in a 2-1 win at Scottish Cup finalists Inverness CT. Partick Thistle will face Queen’s Park in the quarter-finals after securing fourth place with a 2-2 draw away to Raith Rovers.

Morton just missed out on the play-offs despite a 2-1 away win against Cove Rangers, who have been relegated. Arbroath are safe following a 0-0 draw with Hamilton Accies at Gayfield – Accies will now face a battle to avoid relegation in the play-offs.

Neil Doncaster, chief executive of the SPFL, said: “I would like to warmly congratulate everyone connected with Dundee on being crowned winners of the cinch Championship after tonight’s hugely entertaining top-of-the-table title decider.

“It’s the first time in the SPFL’s history that the top two have competed against each other with the trophy at stake on the final day, and it was a match filled with drama and great goals.

“Dundee deserve massive credit for overturning a seven-point deficit at the top of the table since the middle of March, with the title win confirmed as the club enjoy a 10-match unbeaten run.

“I’m sure their supporters will be excited about their return to our top flight, which comes after Dundee conceded the least goals across the whole of the cinch Championship.

“The fact we had nine teams with it all to play for tonight reinforces how competitive a league this is, and we all now look forward to the promotion play-off matches to finish off the season.”
