McLaren wins First Goal of the Month competition

Solo strike wins Goal of the Month

Thanks to the fans who voted in the first ever Scottish Football League Goal of the Month competition that was run on Goal of the Month last month.

The ten goals selected were all of high quality and three of them,  Queen of the South's solo goal from Willie McLaren, Iain Russell's dazzling effort for Livingston and Peterhead's Paul Emslie provided intense debate over who should win.

In the end, it was Queen of the South striker Willie McLaren's goal against Ross Willie McLarenCounty on August 28 that was voted as the winner by the media panel comprising of Donald Walker, Sports Editor of The Scotsman, TV, Radio and Newspaper pundit Des McKeown along with Journalists Craig Stewart and Kenny MacDonald

Doonhamer boss Kenny Brannigan was delighted saying, "I am really pleased to hear that Willie has won this award. It is not often guys in the SFL get recognition so I am delighted that Willie's goal was chosen. He is a joy to watch and has scored another contender for Goal of the Month against Dunfermline on the Saturday that has just been."  

Palmerston Park assistant boss Neil Scally said, “The best way to describe Willie’s goal is to compare it to Henrik Larsson’s chip in the game where Celtic beat Rangers 6-2 but Willie’s goal was probably better.”

McLaren left a trail of Dingwall defenders behind him before effortlessly chipping over Michael McGovern to have Scally saying, “Willie’s finish was like Henrik’s however, the way he got away from their defence on the half way line was even better. He deceived them totally and it was a wonderful goal and if it had been scored in the Premiership, people would be talking about it world wide and hopefully, this honour will help achieve that.”

Twenty five year old McLaren said, “I enjoyed scoring that one and it is great to be the first ever winner of this award.”
