Team of the Week

Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate is the star man in the SPFL Team of the Week...

GK – David Hutton (Airdrieonians)
Talk about being thrown in at the deep end! Diamonds stopper Hutton was subbed on in the 82nd minute and immediately tasked with facing a penalty after fellow keeper Josh Rae saw red. Not only did he save the resulting spot-kick, Hutton made another vital stop to ensure his side left East End Park with a point in a 1-1 draw.

DEF – James Tavernier (Rangers)
What a weekend for the Rangers skipper! Tavernier was in fine form at the Tony Macaroni Arena on Saturday, scoring twice (including a trademark top corner free-kick) as Rangers ran out 3-0 winners against a battling Livingston side. Then, on Sunday, the Gers skipper was inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame for his contributions to the team over a near eight-year stay at Ibrox.

DEF – Jack Baird (Greenock Morton)
Dominant in both boxes, Morton skipper Jack Baird showed the best of his attacking and defensive qualities in his side’s victory over Dundee on Friday. Baird headed home the game’s only goal and was fantastic at the back, ensuring the Ton kept a clean sheet and continued their push for promotion under Dougie Imrie.

DEF – Calum Butcher (Motherwell)
Motherwell seem to have turned a real corner in recent weeks, with Sunday’s hard-fought victory over Hearts the epitome of the team’s new lease of life under caretaker boss Stuart Kettlewell. We could have picked a number of players in claret and amber but have gone for Butcher. He was a brick wall at the back at and has made a real difference to the Steelmen since joining this month.

DEF – Leon McCann (Falkirk)
McCann has arguably been the Bairns’ most consistent performer in 22/23. Falkirk’s number 3 has made himself one of the first names on John McGlynn’s teamsheet due to his athleticism, composure on the ball and defensive nous. Saturday’s match against Alloa saw the left-back put in one of his finest defensive displays of the season as Falkirk battled to a narrow 1-0 win.

MID – Lucas De Bolle (Hamilton Accies)
One of the most eye-catching results of the weekend came from the Caledonian Stadium as Accies continued their upturn in form with a huge 3-0 win over Caley Thistle. On-loan Newcastle United man Lucas De Bolle was brilliant in the middle of the park and capped a fine display by bagging his first ever professional goal. Well played, Lucas!

MID – Reo Hatate (Celtic)
Is there currently a better player in Scotland than Reo Hatate? It looks unlikely after Saturday’s display where the Japanese maestro ran the show in midfield for Celtic in a 4-0 home win over Aberdeen. With energy, technical ability and productivity in spades, the Hoops midfielder put in one of his finest displays to date, scoring twice en route to victory. He is this week’s Star Man!

MID – Alex Ferguson (East Fife)
Not for the first time this season, East Fife’s teenage sensation Ferguson lit up Bayview with a top-tier performance. He scored one, assisted another and was a constant threat in the middle of the park throughout his side’s impressive 2-0 win over league leaders Dumbarton. With 10 goal involvements from midfield already this season the future looks very bright for the on-loan Saint.

FWD – Danny Mullen (Partick Thistle)
After four games without a win, Saturday’s trip to Somerset Park was a huge one for the Maryhill Jags. Led by caretaker boss and club legend Kris Doolan, Thistle put in a battling performance against one of their promotion rivals and came away with a huge victory. Striker Mullen put in an industrious display in attack and bagged the game’s only goal to ensure the points went back to G20.

FWD – Stevie May (St. Johnstone)
Stevie May was the man of the moment for St. Johnstone on Saturday, scoring twice as Saints picked up their second 2-1 victory of the season at Tannadice. The first was a fine, sweeping finish on the volley and the second capitalised on a moment of misjudgment from the United keeper. The result moved Saints 10 points clear of their Tayside rivals and to within five points of the top six.

FWD – Kallum Higginbotham (Kelty Hearts)
Kelty’s number 11 continued his goalscoring hot streak with an impressive double at New Central Park in his side’s 3-0 win over Queen of the South. A well-taken spot-kick and a fine first-time finish made it four goals in three games for Higginbotham, who continues to show his class for the Maroon Machine. The result also took Kelty level on points with the seventh-placed Doonhamers.
