Aberdeen back on Euro stage

Aberdeen make their return to European football after a five-year absence when they face Daugava Riga at Pittodrie on Thursday night.

The Europa League first-round qualifier is the club's first game in this competition since a heavy defeat to Czech side Sigma Olomouc at the beginning of season 2009/10.

The away leg is a week today and Derek McInnes is hoping to guide his team past their Latvian opponents and into the second round, where Dutch outfit FC Groningen await.

The Dons boss said: "As a city and a club we've been without European football the last wee while and I think we've all got to be excited by it - the players, staff and support.

"We feel well versed on them and are confident there will not be too many surprises from them. People have commented that we're back early and maybe seen it as a negative but for us it's something we're all looking forward to."

Daugava Riga are well into their domestic season but are sitting seventh in the 10-team table, with 20 points from 19 games.
