On Saturday December 1, 1979 Aberdeen and Morton met in the League Cup semi-final at Hampden Park, with the Dons winning 2-1.

Alex Ferguson's side had beaten both Celtic and Rangers home and away en route to the last four while Benny Rooney's team knocked out Kilmarnock on penalties in the quarter-final after it finished 5-5 on aggregate.

The Dons dominated the first half and Mark McGhee headed them in front, then Gordon Strachan converted a penalty, but the Cappielow club were much improved after the break and Andy Ritchie got a goal back from the spot towards the end.

Aberdeen faced Dundee United in the final, only to lose 3-0 in a Dens Park replay after a 0-0 draw at Hampden, but they went on to clinch the Premier Division title in a memorable season.

Morton, who were a real bogey side for the Dons at that time, won three of the four league meetings between the teams but eventually finished sixth in the table.
