Ayr hit five, Brechin off the bottom

Jordan Preston scored inside 30 seconds and Alan Forrest, Gerry McLauchlan, Brian Gilmour and Craig Moore were also on target for Ian McCall's side, who stay a point clear at the summit.

Second-placed Dunfermline saw off Albion Rovers 3-0 at East End Park with goals from Joe Cardle, Rhys McCabe and top scorer Faissal El Bakhtaoui. Rovers had player/boss Darren Young sent off in stoppage time.

Ryan Thomson scored a late winner as Stranraer moved to within a point of the play-offs thanks to a 1-0 victory over Airdrieonians at the Excelsior Stadium.

Peterhead and Forfar drew 2-2 at Balmoor. Gavin Swankie and Iain Campbell netted for the visitors after Nicky Riley opened the scoring but Leighton McIntosh earned the Blue Toon a point.

It was also 2-2 between Stenhousemuir and Brechin at Ochilview. Alan Cook's opener was overturned by second-half goals from Andy Jackson and David Weatherston but Carlos Mazana struck for the Warriors in the final minute.
