Dumbarton have named Stranraer boss Stephen Aitken as their new manager following the departure of Ian Murray to St Mirren at the end of last week.

Aitken had been in charge at Stair Park since October 2012 and led the Blues to the promotion play-offs in each of the last two seasons in League 1.

The 38-year-old former Morton and Stranraer player has agreed a deal with the Championship side until the end of 2016/17.

Dumbarton chief executive Gilbert Lawrie told the club website: "The board of directors are delighted to have Stephen as our new manager. He was top of our list to come to Dumbarton and he arrives at the club with a terrific reputation.

"We strongly believe Stephen has the qualities to help us build and develop for the future. We are grateful to the committee at Stranraer FC, whose co-operation was well received.”

Aitken, who will be assisted by Stephen Farrell, added: "It is a great honour to be manager of Dumbarton. I can't wait to get started and I'm really looking forward to the challenge."
