From the archives: Well's late win

Motherwell are bidding to reach their first League Cup final since 2004/05 when they face Rangers at Hampden on Sunday afternoon.

Terry Butcher's side lost to the Ibrox club 12 years ago but they got there in thrilling fashion. Teenage substitute Marc Fitzpatrick was the unlikely hero, scoring in the last minute of extra time to seal a dramatic 3-2 semi-final win over Hearts at Easter Road in February 2005.

Well were in command after goals from Stephen Craigan and Richie Foran (penalty) but the Jam Tarts hit back in the closing minutes through Mark Burchill and Hjalmar Thorarinsson.

The momentum seemed to be with the Tynecastle men but Well made it through when Fitzpatrick drove the ball past Craig Gordon on a memorable night for the Steelmen.
