Heart of Midlothian have appointed Ian Cathro as their new head coach on a contract until the summer of 2019.

Heart of Midlothian have appointed Ian Cathro as their new head coach on a contract until the summer of 2019.

The 30-year-old will be assisted by Austin MacPhee and makes the move to Tynecastle from the coaching staff at Newcastle. He was previously head of youth at Dundee United and has also worked with Rio Ave and Valencia.

The new management team replace Robbie Neilson and Stevie Crawford, who joined MK Dons last week, and will take charge for the first time against Rangers at Ibrox on Saturday.

Hearts CEO Ann Budge told the club website: "We are delighted to have secured the services of Ian Cathro and are confident he is the ideal candidate to take our club forward.

"He is widely regarded as one of the brightest young coaches in the game and has amassed a great deal of experience both at home and abroad."
