The Pars had the best chances before defender Lee Ashcroft was sent off early in the second half but United had a couple of good opportunities thereafter as it finished all square in front of 6,474 fans at East End Park.

The second leg takes place at Tannadice on Friday, with the winners facing Livingston in the semi-final on Monday and Friday of next week.

In Tuesday's other game, Stenhousemuir and Queen's Park drew 1-1 in the first leg of the League 1 semi-final at Ochilview. Martin Scott gave the Warriors a first-half lead but Robbie Leitch equalised for the Spiders early in the second half. The visitors had Adam Cummins sent off after 79 minutes.
