Hughie Gallacher

Dumbarton mourn passing of record goalscorer

Dumbarton have expressed great sadness at the death of their former striker Hughie Gallacher, aged 82. Locally born Gallacher joined the Sons in 1954 after spells at

Duntocher Hibs and Arbroath and despite his 5ft 7inch frame his goalscoring exploits made him a big favourite of the Boghead support.

In less than eight seasons, Gallacher netted 205 goals, from only 231 games with his first season seeing him scoring 28 times in 24 matches including a run of scoring in his first eight matches.

Gallacher was sold to Clyde in 1960, however he returned within a year after a short spell with Queen of the South as well with Dumbarton Chief Executive Gilbert Lawrie advising: “This is very sad news for the club as Hughie was a huge favourite during his time here. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time.

“The funeral arrangements will see a Reception and vigil at St. Michael's Church Dumbarton at 6.30 pm this Thursday night before a Funeral Mass is held at 10am on Friday and thereafter at Dumbarton Cemetery for 11.15am.
