Last-day drama at Alloa

The Championship’s bottom side Alloa host Cowdenbeath at 12.15pm on Saturday, when either of the clubs, as well as Livingston, can achieve safety, be in the play-offs or be relegated.

The importance of the occasion is not lost on Alloa’s Mark Docherty, with the left-sided former St Mirren, Brechin City, Annan and Stranraer man saying: “It is a massive game in our season and a massive weekend for the Championship. It is a do-or-die game and it will be high on pressure.

“We have done well at Cowdenbeath this season, with a 3-0 win and a 2-0 win, but they beat us 3-2 at the Indodrill Stadium back in October so they will have confidence as well.”

The Wasps appointed former Blue Brazil and St Mirren manager Danny Lennon last month to help them in their relegation battle and Docherty added: “Getting Danny in has given everyone a boost.

“We were disappointed to see Barry Smith leave and Paddy Connolly looked after things well but Danny has added something.

“He has quite a different style and is very vocal at the side of the pitch. He seems to really like encouraging the boys that way and we are enjoying it.”

Docherty originally joined Alloa in July 2011 and helped them to the Third Division title the following year before promotion to the Championship in 2013, then spent last season with Stranraer.

He added: “If we stay up it will be up there with the best times in my career. We go into it at the bottom of the table however we know that if we win we will be in the play-offs at least.

“It is pretty unbelievable that you work all season and things come down to the last day and we do not know if we will be eighth, ninth or 10th.

“It has been a great season with visits to Tynecastle, Easter Road and Ibrox. I had done that when I was with St Mirren but I tended to be on the bench so it has been great to be playing in virtually every game this season.

“I feel I have had a good season and contributed a lot to our hopes of staying up. I want to ensure that we stay in this league.”
