League 1 featured game

League 1 leaders Forfar lost to Morton on Saturday but that didn’t stop Dick Campbell having a good week ahead of the Angus derby at Brechin.

The 60-year-old was named League 1 Manager of the Month for October and the former Dunfermline, Brechin, Ross County and Partick Thistle gaffer reckons it was the 25th he has won in his long career!

The Loons beat Airdrie and Stenhousemuir last month and also drew with promotion-chasing Dunfermline and Stranraer, with Campbell saying: “I have awards in my house, in my garage and in my loft and I am proud of them all but they are all team awards as far as I am concerned.

“The players have to go out and play and the staff have to have them ready to play, so it is not just recognition for me, it is recognition for everyone.

“We may have lost at the weekend but Forfar are enjoying a really good season and long may it continue. We brought in six players who used to be full-timers during the summer and they are enjoying being at the club and are all contributing positively.

“Bringing the likes of Derek Young, Dale Hilson, Jim Paterson and Stephen Husband to Forfar shows the ambition of the club and the desire to progress. We are playing good football and teams are having to play well to take anything from us.

“Despite everyone tipping Dunfermline and Morton to run away with things this league is going to be tight all season. We are in there with a chance of doing something and so are Stranraer.

“We are not going to go away easily and neither is Stephen Aitken’s side. Hopefully we can stay at the top for a good bit longer and award number 26 will be received.”

As for facing Brechin, who are now only four points off the top of the table, Campbell said: “This game means a lot to the people of Brechin and Forfar, so it has an extra edge to it. We had a good win back in September and it would be great to repeat that again.

“They will take a boost from beating Stirling Albion in midweek and will see this game as an opportunity to make a statement about their promotion ambitions. We will need to play well to win but I have every confidence in the players that they will do that.”
