League 2 featured match

Long-serving club captain Tony Quinn is hoping Queen’s Park can extend their winning run to seven games when they play Albion Rovers.

Long-serving club captain Tony Quinn is hoping Queen’s Park can extend their winning run to seven games when they play Albion Rovers.

Quinn made his first start in two months last weekend as Gus MacPherson’s side defeated Elgin City 4-1, when he stepped in after David MacGregor picked up a knock.

The 33-year-old said: “It was good to return but it was disappointing that David had to drop out as he was injured. When you go up to Elgin it is always best to be playing as it is a long way to go to sit on the bench. We went up there and won and that pleased the entire squad.”

Both Queen’s Park and Albion Rovers have beaten leaders Arbroath in the last fortnight and the Spiders are one point ahead of Darren Young’s team in League 2.

Quinn said: “Rovers are a very good side and they have a good striker in John Gemmell who gets good service from either wing. We know that we will have a lot to deal with and that John, along with their other attacking players, will give us a tough afternoon.”

Rovers got the better of the Spiders recently in the Scottish Cup and Quinn added: “That defeat has been annoying us for a few weeks now so it would be good to put that right.”

The Hampden club had a miserable season last time out but MacPherson’s new-look squad have already beaten their points total from 2013/14 and have lost just three league games.

Quinn said: “I have been here for 13 years and we have always had decent sides - finishing bottom last season was a one-off. I knew this year would be different and when the head coach and his assistant Chris Hillcoat starting talking about the players they were bringing in I knew we would be strong again.

“We may have surprised some people but I am not one of them. We are where we should be and where we were for a good number of seasons – challenging for promotion.”

Queen’s Park are close to returning home on Saturdays after a year at Airdrie to help facilitate the Commonwealth Games and their training has already returned to their Lesser Hampden complex.

Quinn said: “The new facilities are great and getting access to them just before the Arbroath game a couple of weeks ago gave everyone a lift. The new pitch is a fantastic surface and Lesser Hampden is where I have trained for 13 years, so it is good to be back home. Toryglen was good but it never felt right.

“Come January, the boys get to play at Hampden in a derby game with Clyde. The new boys keep on asking what it is like to play there. I have told them that they will love it. However, there are a lot of games to be played before then, starting with Albion Rovers this weekend.”
