Former Albion Rovers boss Paul Martin is hoping that the Coatbridge side get on better at Ibrox on Sunday in their Scottish Cup quarter-final tie that he did when he was a player.
Martin said: “Rovers have not been at Ibrox since 1982 but I played there as a Hamilton Accies player in 1989 in what turned out to be a memorable game for Mel Sterland and me. A lot of people remember that game as the one where Mel Sterland made his debut and scored in a 3-0 win but I remember it as the game in my professional career when I got the fewest touches of the ball.”
“Rangers destroyed us that day and Mark Walters was incredible and I think I touched the ball twice. Our Player of the Season that year was Kevin McKee and he was up against Mark and he was left tangled in knots.”
“None of us could get a touch on the ball.”
Martin who led the Cliftonhill side to their first promotion in 21 years in 2011 and then kept them up before leaving due to a health scare added: “I hope the Rovers go out and do well. I certainly hope that they go out and get more touches of the ball than I did.”
Meanwhile former Motherwell, Clyde and East Fife midfielder Jamie Pollock has turned down the chance to play at Ibrox to pursue a career in the junior ranks.
The 21 year old is currently without a club and who he was offered the chance of a deal until the end of the season with the Rovers however he has knocked it back and Coatbridge boss James Ward reckons that he is off to join Irvine Meadow.
Ward said: “Jamie came in on trial and did well and we have offered him a deal for the next few months. He would have been in the squad for Ibrox and could well have started if a couple of players don’t make it through injury.”
“He has opted to try his luck elsewhere and now someone else can get the chance to play in what is a huge game for our club.”
