Jim McInally guided Morton to the Second Division title in 2006/07 but is hoping to deny his former club silverware at Cappielow on Saturday.
Morton top League 1 on goal difference from Forfar, with Stranraer also in contention, and the Balmoor boss said: “It is a bit ironic that I am going back and hoping that Peterhead do their job and get the win that could deny Morton a title.
“When we won the league it was a different scenario as we actually won it despite losing a game at Raith Rovers. Stirling Albion lost so we were crowned champions despite having two games to play.
“This time it is more like a cup final for Morton as it is a one-off and I am sure that they will get a big support to back them. Last Saturday we lost to Airdrie at home and the difference was that they still had something to play for and we did not.
“They kept on pushing for a winner whereas we looked to have settled for a point and they got their reward. Having four to five thousand fans inside Cappielow will produce a great atmosphere and our players will raise their game.
“They will not want to be the side that gets rolled over to give someone a title. This Peterhead team have been to Ibrox and won so we will be dangerous at Morton despite the noisy backing of the home crowd.”
McInally knows that his opposite number, Jim Duffy, will have his side well versed in how to go about their business against the Balmoor men.
He added: “Jim knows more about us than any other League 1 manager. He was with Clyde when we were in League 2 so he has amassed a lot of knowledge about us. They have done well at our place this season and won twice but we won on our last visit to Morton. That may just unnerve them a little.
“I enjoyed winning the league with Morton but all I am looking for this weekend is the three points for Peterhead. Whatever happens after that is not something I will be involved in so I am only concentrating on winning this game.”
