Elgin City’s dynamic midfielder Daniel Moore is delighted to be back playing in black and white after a year in the Highland League with Nairn County.
The 25-year-old former Ross County and Peterhead player is enjoying life at Borough Briggs the second time around and is honest enough to admit he should never have left.
Moore said: “It is good to be back playing in League 2 and I am enjoying playing in games that are really competitive every week. Football is giving me a buzz again and, while the last couple of results have not been great, I am delighted to be at Elgin.
“To be honest, going to Nairn last summer was a mistake. I had just had a really good season with Elgin in what was Division Three but hindsight is a wonderful thing. I should not have moved away but I have learnt from it.
“It was an easy decision to come back when the boss Barry Wilson came in for me at the end of last season. I knew as far back as last February that I wanted to leave Nairn. Barry contacted the club in May and things moved on quickly from there.”
The Elgin Moore knew is different to the one he re-joined as Wilson has come in to replace Ross Jack as manager and there has been a turnaround in players as well.
From the squad that defeated East Stirlingshire 3-2 in the last game of Moore’s first spell only half remain, with Wilson looking to mould his own side with greater emphasis on local talent.
One exception to that policy has been the recruitment of vastly experienced centre-back Marvin Andrews and Moore is enjoying playing alongside the 38-year-old.
He said: “Marvin has been massive for us. He gives the team a real presence in defence and he has great experience from playing at a really high level. He has also been a big help with the youngsters we have in the team.”
Andrews and Moore will be looking to help the Moray men to victory this weekend at the Gayfield home of league leaders Arbroath, who have won five games out of six so far.
To do so they will need to shrug off the disappointment of defeats to Queen’s Park and Montrose but Elgin are only a point outside the top four in a tight division.
Moore added: “My own form has been good apart from last weekend against Montrose when I was flat and for some reason so were most of the team. I have been creating chances for the side and I feel that I am getting stronger in every game after not playing much last season.
“I am looking to get going again against Arbroath and I am sure that the rest of the boys are. This is the best game to have as they have been flying so far this season. There is little pressure on us, particularly as we are away from home, but we have confidence in our own ability.
“If we play like we can then we can do well. There is no better way to get going again than against the league leaders. No-one is expecting us to win so we will go and try and to surprise a few people.”
