Motherwell beat Premiership leaders Dundee United 1-0 at Fir Park on Friday night to end a run of five straight league defeats.
Iain Vigurs hit the winner early in the second half as the Steelmen, with Kenny Black in caretaker charge following the resignation of Stuart McCall, leapfrogged St Mirren in the table.
United looked the more likely team to make the breakthrough in the first half but fell behind in 52 minutes when Keith Lasley set up Vigurs to drill home a low shot.
Lionel Ainsworth, earlier denied by the post, had an effort disallowed for offside but one goal was enough to give Motherwell only their third Premiership win of the season as United slipped to a third successive away league defeat without scoring.
