Partick Thistle have added attacking midfielder James Craigen to their squad on a two year deal as they look to replicate the success they had in recruiting giant striker Mark McGuigan from the Scottish Universities side.
Craigen, who started his career at Preston North End, also played for the Educated XI and the 21 year old has been recruited after two weeks of pre-season training during which time he knocked back an offer from Blue Square Premier League side Tamworth Town.
Firhill manager Jackie McNamara said, “I’m absolutely delighted that we have managed to sign James. In many ways his signature is a vote of confidence in how we go about things at Thistle as he was given a good offer from Tamworth.”
“James was with Preston from the age of 8 to 18 before electing to concentrate on his studies at Edinburgh University and play part-time.”
McNamara added, “He played for Edinburgh University and was also part of the Scottish University team that won the BUCS Home National football tournament in April and he was in the Great British University team that finished runners up to Japan in the 2011 World Student Games”
“He is two footed and has fantastic ability and it is great that we have him here for two years.”
Craigen is expected to play in the ARR Craib Cup at the weekend where Thistle play a Celtic XI on Saturday with an Everton XI and Airdrie United also meeting.
