Phil O'Donnell, Motherwell FC's captain, tragically died after collapsing on the pitch during Motherwell's fixture against Dundee United.

As a mark of respect, the SPL has confirmed that Motherwell's game at Easter Road and Gretna's home fixture against St Mirren on Wednesday have been called off.  The Motherwell V Celtic game on the 6th of January has also been postponed.

SPL Executive Chairman Lex Gold said: "All of us at the Scottish Premier League are devastated at this awful, untimely death.

"Phil was a first-class footballer and a fine young man.

"We send our condolences to his family and friends.

"As a mark of respect we have called off Wednesday's game with Hibernian at Easter Road."

On the other fixtures Lex Gold added: "It is clear that Fir Park has became a place of homage for many fans to Phil.

"Sensitive to this, both Gretna and St Mirren have agreed with the SPL that their game on Wednesday should be postponed.

"The four other games will proceed as planned with the clubs being invited to honour Phil's memory before the start of those games."

"We understand from Phil's family they would appreciate it if the Motherwell V Celtic game scheduled for Sunday 6th January could be postponed.  Both clubs are happy to meet this request and we have called the game off."

Last night, Motherwell FC chief executive Ian Stillie said from Wishaw General:

"The management, directors, players and fans are all stunned and having great difficulty in comprehending what has happened over the last few hours.

"At this stage we do not have all the facts surrounding the tragic death of Phil O'Donnell.

"He was transferred almost immediately to an awaiting ambulance and taken to Wishaw General.

"It is believed Phil suffered some form of seizure and was pronounced dead at 17:18."
