St Mirren have named Alex Rae as their new manager following the departure of Ian Murray in the wake of last week’s 1-0 defeat at Dumbarton.

The 46-year-old former Dundee boss also has experience as a coach with MK Dons, Notts County and Belgian side Genk, where he was No 2 to Alex McLeish.

Rae’s playing career began at Falkirk in the late 1980s and he also had spells with Millwall, Sunderland, Wolves, Rangers, Dundee and MK Dons.

St Mirren go into Saturday's Ladbrokes Championship game at bottom club Alloa with just 12 points from 16 games and are eighth in the table.
