Late goals from James Tavernier and Lee Wallace proved decisive after Will Vaulks had cancelled out an early goal from Dean Shiels.
Raith Rovers are up to second place after preserving their perfect record at Stark's Park by beating Morton 2-1. Thomas O'Ware equalised for the visitors after Mark Stewart had put Rovers ahead but Jason Thomson struck deep into stoppage time for Ray McKinnon's men.
Hibernian climbed to third spot with a 3-0 win over Queen of the South at Palmerston. Jason Cummings, Liam Henderson and Martin Boyle got the goals for Alan Stubbs' side.
Eamonn Brophy, on loan from Hamilton, scored a late winner as Dumbarton earned a 2-1 home win against Livingston, who drop to the foot of the table. Gary Glen had cancelled out a Kevin Cawley goal just before half-time but Livi had Myles Hippolyte sent off before Brophy struck.
St Mirren and Alloa played out a 1-1 draw in Paisley. On-loan Aberdeen striker Lawrence Shankland gave Saints the lead midway through the second half but Jason Marr equalised.
