Rangers beat Queen of the South 2-1 at Palmerston in the first leg of the Premiership play-off quarter-final on Saturday evening.
Stevie Smith gave Stuart McCall's men the lead direct from a free-kick just before half-time but Derek Lyle hauled James Fowler's team level after 64 minutes.
Rangers, already defeated twice in Dumfries this season, came out on top this time thanks to a Dean Shiels goal with 15 minutes remaining.
The second leg takes place at Ibrox on Sunday May 17, live on BT Sport at 3.30pm, and the winners face Hibernian in the semi-finals.
