Ayr United player/ manager Mark Roberts is hoping that he will be the boss that will get Ryan Donnelly back to his best. The 22 year old former Airdrie front man looked destined for the top when he was invited to train with Wigan by Roberto Martinez, who now manages Everton in 2012 after hitting 25 goals in 33 games for the Diamonds.
However no move came and Donnelly’s form has suffered ever since and a move to Brechin last summer failed to kick-start his career despite scoring three times in his first three games.
Donnelly returned to Lanarkshire to join Albion Rovers in January on a short-term deal and after failing to win a deal at Dumbarton last month he has joined the Honest Men.
Roberts reckons he can get Donnelly firing on all cylinders again especially after he grabbed a double against East Stirling on Saturday as he explained: “Ryan is a quality player however he has lost his way. He has lost a bit of confidence but I am sure that we can bring it back.”
“I know better than most that strikers need confidence to do well and I am sure that he will get that here. There is a very decent player inside Ryan and we will do everything we can to bring it out of him.”
