Stranraer defender Scott Robertson reckons that the experience the Blues have picked up in the past year against full time sides will help them to a Petrofac Training Cup shock against Falkirk.
The 26 year old said: “Falkirk will be favourites for this game but we are capable of doing something in it. We seem to raise our game and do well against full time sides so we can win this one.”
“We have played Ross County twice in the past year beating them once and then nearly doing it again. We have drawn with Inverness and scored three times against Hibs at Easter Road as well as being the first team to get a point from Rangers last season which was a decent result especially at Ibrox.”
“I am sure those experiences will help us do well in this tie.”
Robertson also reckons that a change in formation will help Stranraer prevail as he explained: “We had not started the season in our best form and the manager changed the formation that we have been playing to get us going again. We went back to 4-4-2 as the 3-5-2 was not really working for us and it has helped.”
“We were unlucky with that approach against Ross County in the Scottish League Cup last week and then against Dunfermline last Saturday. Against the Pars they were on top until they had a man sent off and then they were better once we had a man sent off.”
The 26 year old former Queen of the South, Stirling Albion, Partick Thistle and Arbroath player is hoping to match his best ever run in this competition by defeating Peter Houston’s side.
Robertson explained: “I have gone a stage further when I was with Arbroath and we reached the semi-final against Queen of the South. We lost to them 2-1 with a goal in the last minute of extra time which was of course disappointing.”
Whilst the semi-final stage was the best in this competition Robertson does have a Cup Final appearance under his belt as he explained: “I played in the Scottish Cup Final when I was a substitute against Rangers for Queen of the South in 2008. I got the last 5 to 10 minutes however it is not my career highlight as that came in winning the Second Division with Stirling.”
“I had not played much in the Cup run but it was different with Stirling. I also played with Arbroath when we got a 1-1 draw at Celtic in the Scottish Cup. That was a great result especially as we came back from losing one of the worst own goals ever when the ball hit Alex Keddie’s back from a clearance and went in.”
Robertson left the Gayfield men last summer for the Stair Park side and it is a move he has enjoyed as he explained: “This is my second season at Stranraer and it has been great time. We have always had a good squad here since I came in and have just added Willie Gibson and Daniel Stoney from Rangers.”
“We lost Andy Stirling to Dunfermline and he was a big player for us as was Mark 'Sparky' Docherty who had gone to Alloa but Craig Pettigrew has come in for him and done really well in the left back role.”
Having former Bairn Gibson on board has boosted hopes of a home win with Robertson saying: “The addition of Willie has given us more of a goal threat so we have a chance especially if he can get Jamie Longworth firing as he is a 20 goal a season striker as is Craig Malcolm. With these guys in our team then we have a chance.”
