East Stirling’s recently appointed manager Craig Tully has admitted he would be happy to alter his side’s pre-season programme if club chairman Tony Ford is able to convince Premiership giants Chelsea to play the game the Shire were promised 52 years ago.
The Scottish League 2 minnows sold Eddie McCreadie to the Stamford Bridge side in 1962 for the princely sum of £5,000 as well as home and away games between the sides.
The English giants headed north in 1963 under the guidance of Tommy Docherty however the fixture in London never took place and Ford has now contacted Jose Mourinho’s club to see if they can play it this summer after discovering McCreadie’s transfer documentation.
Tully said: “I start my first day with the players this weekend when pre-season training begins but I spoke to them all on Tuesday when the Chelsea story broke. It would be fair to say that they are excited however we know that it is a bit of a request from nowhere to come back from the World Cup and then play East Stirling.”
“We have Alloa, Stenhousemuir, Inverurie Locos, Peterhead and Partick Thistle lined up for this summer however it would be brilliant to squeeze in Chelsea sometime next month.”
Chairman Ford said: “The response to our request from Chelsea fans has been amazing. A good number of them have got in touch with the club to say that they hope something can be arranged as Eddie McCreadie remains a massive favourite with them.”
