Dundee United reached the last four of the League Cup with a 7-6 penalty shoot-out win over Hibernian after a thrilling tie ended 3-3 at Easter Road.

Chris Erskine gave United an early lead but Dominique Malonga soon equalised, only for Aidan Connolly to restore the advantage for Jackie McNamara's men.

Jason Cummings levelled for Hibs and Ryan Dow put the visitors back in front before Matthew Kennedy forced extra time with a 78th-minute equaliser.

With no further goals, it came down to penalties and all 10 regulation kicks were scored. Blair Spittal and Sam Stanton converted the first two in sudden death and Hibs had a chance to win it after John Rankin missed but Kennedy saw his effort saved by Radoslaw Cierzniak

Conor Townsend then made no mistake and Czerniak denied Hibernian full-back David Gray to send United into the semi-finals, which will be played on January 31 and February 1, 2015.
