Warburton thrilled by title triumph

Rangers manager Mark Warburton was delighted to see his side clinch promotion to the Ladbrokes Premiership with four games to spare.

Rangers manager Mark Warburton was delighted to see his side clinch promotion to the Ladbrokes Premiership with four games to spare.

James Tavernier's 13th goal of the season was enough to give the Ibrox men a 1-0 home win over Dumbarton on Tuesday night as they clinched the Championship title.

Warburton told the Rangers club: “There was a clear agenda - David (Weir) and I knew what we had to do and that was win the Championship.

“We were a little bit predictable in the first half but we dominated possession and didn’t get the breaks. Second half we could have scored three, four, five, even six. All credit to the boys because they got the goal and the fans were magnificent - they should enjoy this moment.

“There is still a lot of work to be done. Don’t forget this is a young squad - we’re only 10 months in and 11 players came in right at the start of the season.”

Goalscorer Tavernier added: “It’s an unbelievable feeling. We pressed a lot and tried to create chances, but they defended really well and the keeper pulled off some great saves, so I don’t think the scoreline tells the story of the game.”
