Aspiring Celtic hot-shot Jay Beatty has scooped the SPFL’s Goal Of the Month Award by a record margin – and the news was broken to him today by his Hoops hero, Georgios Samaras.
Greek international and former Celtic Park forward Samaras sent a special video message all the way from Saudi Arabia to the 10-year-old from Lurgan, informing the youngster of his landslide success.
Young Jay knocked in his strike at half-time in Celtic’s win at Hamilton Accies in early January after being invited to the game as a special guest of the New Douglas Park side and even gave a pre-match team talk to the Celtic players in the away dressing room.
His success in the SPFL’s Goal Of The Month competition saw him win by a record margin, registering 97% of the thousands of votes cast, with Samaras on hand to deliver the good news.
The striker, who played for Celtic between 2008 and 2014, said: “Jay, it’s great to see you scoring goals like me and I’m very happy to announce you as winner of Goal of the Month.
“Well done on such a great job – I miss you and hope to see you soon.”
Samaras and Beatty struck up a friendship when they met at the end of Celtic’s SPFL Premiership-winning season in May 2014.
On hearing the news Martin Beatty, Jay’s father, said: “Not many of us get to live our dreams and Jay is getting to live all our dreams. Thank you to everyone for making this possible - we are so grateful and proud.”
