Ladbrokes Premiership clubs set a new opening weekend attendance record at the start of the SPFL’s fifth season, with 110,583 fans recorded as attending the six top-flight matches on Saturday and Sunday.

Large crowds across the weekend, particularly at Celtic Park and Easter Road on Saturday and then at Fir Park and Pittodrie on Sunday, helped the SPFL beat its previous opening day best by more than 25,000.

The aggregate Ladbrokes Premiership / Scottish Premiership attendances on the opening weekend since the SPFL’s first season in 2013/14 are as follows:

- 2013/14: 85,302
- 2014/15: 33,588 (*Celtic v Partick Thistle postponed due to Glasgow 2014)
- 2015/16: 83,623
- 2016/17: 82,550
- 2017/18: 110,583

SPFL Chief Executive Neil Doncaster said: “After so much anticipation ahead of the 2017/18 season, the opening weekend of SPFL action lived up to the hype and it’s a huge positive for Scottish football that this was reflected in such a marked increase in Ladbrokes Premiership attendances.

“This continues the trend of last season when total fans attending SPFL league games including play-offs rose by 12% year-on-year to more than 4.2million. All of this good news is a very powerful endorsement of Scottish football and a reminder that we have some of the most committed and passionate supporters in the world.”
