SPFL Spotlight: Dale Hilson

Forfar Athletic have made a fine start to the season and head for second-placed Dunfermline on Saturday as League 1 leaders.

Former Dundee United striker Dale Hilson, who had several loan spells at Station Park before making a permanent move in the summer, has already bagged five league goals for Dick Campbell’s men this season. The 21-year-old is the latest player to fall under the SPFL Spotlight.

What’s the best goal you have ever scored?
That came in an U19 game for Dundee United against Motherwell at Bathgate. A long diagonal ball was played out to the wing and I let it bounce before hitting it first time from 30 yards with their goalkeeper taken by surprise. I remember the goal so well as it came the day after I had been named Clydesdale Bank U19 Player of the Season - I was still on a high.

What’s the best game you have played in?
There are two that stand out. Another U19 game against Motherwell was a bit special as Dundee United won 6-3 and I scored four goals. At first-team level, making my debut for United aged 16 against Hamilton Accies in the SPL was very special.

What is your favourite away ground?
Tannadice is now an away ground so I can choose it! The best occasion there is when I played in a pre-season friendly between United and Dundee and the ground was nearly full. I got 30 minutes and I loved it.

What is your favourite other sport?
I am starting to get into golf but I am very, very average at it. It is for enjoyment only and I find it really relaxing at the moment.

Which player in the world would you bring to Forfar to play alongside?
That would either be Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi. I will pick Messi and I am fairly sure he would get a game at Forfar before the rest of the squad!

What is your favourite pre-match meal?
When I make something for myself before a game I will usually have a couple of Weetabix followed by toast with scrambled eggs and beans.

Who is your favourite singer?
I honestly listen to anything as I am really laid back about music. Danny Denholm chooses the music for the team and does a good job of mixing things up.

Who is the biggest moaner you have played with?
Mark Baxter, without a doubt. He moans about the slightest wee thing!

Who has the best football tricks at Station Park?
Gavin Swankie is the most creative player at the club although he is not one for doing tricks. He concentrates more on skill in game situations but he is up there with the best.

Who is the worst dressed at the club?
There are a few boys who could do with smartening up - I am probably one of them as I am always in jogging trousers! I am only 21 but some of the younger boys wear dreadful stuff.  James Dale is the worst - let’s just call him a student!

Who is the best trainer at Forfar?
Stuart Malcolm sets a really good example. He wants everything to be done at a really high standard and gives it his all.

Who is the best dancer in the squad?
That could be myself! However, from what I remember about our nights out it has to be James Dale again.
