Chief Executive David Longmuir was delighted to host the IRN-BRU ‘Team Photo’ that launched the new season with representatives from the clubs across the three divisions of the IRN-BRU SFL Championship in attendance.
The Scottish Football League Chief Executive said: “I am thrilled with the launch of the new season and having managers or coaches and indeed, Chairman here from the clubs is fantastic and shows the spirit we have in our three divisions.
“I looked around the room and saw an array of Scottish international players that are now cutting their teeth in management in the SFL. It is terrific that we have half a Scotland squad as well as winners from our League Championships and cup competitions as well.
“There are a lot for people here proud of what they have done in the SFL and there is a lot to look forward to.”
Season 2012/13 will be different with Longmuir saying: “There is a new dynamic with Rangers playing in the Third Division and for players in that division, they should see this as an outstanding opportunity to showcase their talents. A real chance that they may never have had before.
“Rangers will bring a profile and publicity to Third Division grounds but their visits also give an opportunity for players to impress on a platform that they have not had before.”
It can’t come quickly enough for Longmuir who said: “I am looking forward to seeing our Goals of the Month competitions building up across the three divisions and cup competitions as we have had some tremendous goals in recent years.
“It would be great to see them scored by young Scottish footballers. I am not being unfair on others but I would like to see home grown talent flourish in the SFL.”
Longmuir reckons that the sponsors of the SFL who are benefiting from increased exposure as a result of Rangers playing in the Third Division and the early rounds of both SFL cup competitions more than deserve it.
He said: “IRN-BRU, Ramsdens, BBC ALBA and, the Scottish Government, were with us before Rangers were into membership of the SFL, so if there is any reward to be had, then it is only right that it goes to them.
“They supported the SFL and the member clubs before the increased exposure and media attention came along, so if it generates extra business for them, they are very welcome to it.”
IRN-BRU first backed the SFL at the start of season 2007/08 and their sponsorship is in its final year of a second three year deal that came into effect at the start of season 2010/11.
Longmuir finished by saying: “I look forward to the season starting with a great deal of fizz.”
